Flower bolero

This is another pattern I did long ago based on a pattern by DROPS design, but I replaced the flower squares with another pattern, which I liked more. It is a very simple pattern as the graph makes it easier to form a metal picture. The squares can also be replaced by  interesting patterns stitches as well as the side strips and the lower back strip.

The Afrikaans pattern is available on the website of Vrouekeur magazine.

Pattern

<subhead>Flower squares for back

Begin with Purple Pink and crochet 6 ch, ss in 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1: 3 ch, 1 dc in ring, 2 ch, (2 dc cl in ring, 2 ch) 7 times, ss in top of 3 ch.

Round 2: (5 ch, 1 sc in top of cl) 8 times.

Round 3: ss into ch sp, (3 ch, 7 dc) in 5 ch sp, 1 sc in next sc, (8 dc in next 5 ch sp, 1 sc in next sc) 7 times, ending with ss in 1st sc (= 8 petals). Fasten off.

With Aubergine (push the petals forward and crochet at the back of the petals):

Round 4: 1 sc in any 2 ch sp of round 1, [2 ch, (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in next 2 ch sp, 2 ch, 1 sc in next 2 ch sp] 4 times, ending with ss in 1st sc.

Round 5: ss in next 2 ch sp, (5 ch, 1 sc in next 2 ch sp) 12 times, ending with ss in 1st ss (12 spaces).

Round 6: ss in next 5 ch sp, 3 ch, 1 dc in the same sp, (3 ch, 2 dc cl in the same sp) twice, 3 ch, [(1 sc in next sp, 3 ch) twice, (2 dc cl, 3 ch)] 3 times, (1 sc in next sp, 3 ch) twice, ss in top of cl. Fasten off.

Arrange the squares 3 (4; 4) in the width and 3 (3; 4) in the height.

Join the squares in round 6 through all 5 of the 3 ch sps as follows: Crochet 2 sides of round 6 untill after the 2nd dc cl, instead of 3 ch, crochet 1 ch, 1 sc in the 1st side sp of the 1st square, 1 ch, 1 sc in next sp of 2nd square, 1 sc in next sp of the 1st square, 1 ch, 1 sc in next sp of 2nd square, complete joining of the 5 sp in the same way. Join all the squares in the same way. The second row squares will be joined at 2 sides.

With Aubergine, work 1 round around the back panel as follows (start with the top right corner):

1 sc in corner, 3 ch (=1 dc), 75 (83; 91) dc at the top edge, 56 (56; 74) dc at the side edge, 72 (78; 86) dc at the bottom edge and (56; 74) dc at the other side edge. End with 1 ss in top of 3 ch. Fasten off.

Side strips

Start in the centre of the 4 blocks (middle centre at the neck).

With Aubergine Mix, crochet 1 dc in each of the next 38 (42; 46) dc at the top of the back panel and 45 (49; 53) ch for the armhole. Turn work around. Crochet 1 dc in the 4 th ch from hook, 1 dc in every ch and 1 dc in every dc at the top of the back panel up to the centre neck back = 81 (89; 97) dc. Continue as follows:

Row 1: 3 ch, (= 1 dc), *1 ch, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, rep from * to end.

Row 2: 1 dc in every dc and in every ch.

Rep row 1 and 2 until work measures 4 cm, increase 16 dc evenly in the dc row only. Rep increase untill work measures 8 (12; 16) cm long = 145 (153; 161) dc.

For extra large and extra extra large: rep increase untill work measures 20 cm = 177 dc.

Continue untill work measures 18 (20; 22) cm. end with 1 row dc. Fasten off.

Repeat with other side.

Back strip

With Aubergine Mix, beg with 1 sc in the corner at bottom. Crochet 3 ch (=1 dc), 1 dc in every 71 (77; 85) dc = 72 (78; 86) dc. Continue with rows 1 and 2 as described in the side strips up to 13 (17;13) cm from squares. End with 1 row dc. Fasten off.

Stitch side seams.

Edge pattern

Start with centre back seam.

Round 1: 1 ch, 1 sc in every dc.

Round 2: 4 ch, 1 sc in next sc, *skip 2 sc, 6 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, 3 ch, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * to end, ss in 2nd of 4 ch. Fasten off.
