Flower fun

I did this bag in 2014 for Vrouekeur Magazine and it is still very popular and not too difficult. The Afrikaans pattern is available on Vrouekeur’s website, but I thought it will be helpful if the pattern is also available in English to be accessible to more people. What you need:

  • Elle Premier Cotton 4 –ply (50 g-balls): 3 balls lime green, 1 ball light pink and 1 ball dark pink.
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • 30 cm green lining
  • Small amount of stuffing

 

Size: 20 x 20 cm.

 

Abbreviations (American crochet terminology):

ch – chain stitch

cl – cluster

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

rep – repeat

rnd – round

sc – single crochet

sp – space

ss – slip stitch

st – stitch

 

Flowers (crochet 12)

With light pink, crochet 4 ch, ss in 1st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: 1 ch, 12 sc in ring, ss in 1st sc.

Rnd 2: (3 ch, 2 dc-cl in next sc, 3 ch, ss in next sc) 6 times, ss in next sc (= 6 leaves). Fasten off.

Rnd 3: This rnd is formed with dark pink at the back of the flower.

Insert hook through the 2 sts at the back between the leaves and work 1 sc, (4 ch, 1 sc between the next 2 leaves) 5 times, 4 ch, ss in 1st sc.

Rnd 4: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in every 4 ch sp, ending with ss in 1st sc. Fasten off.

 

Green bag

With 3 mm hook and lime green, crochet 53 ch.

Row 1 : 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in every ch (= 52 sc).

Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in every sc.

Rep row 2 till 114 rows are completed.

Stitch the flowers onto the bag, only up to row 52.

 

Side panels (crochet 2)

Start with 11 ch.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in every ch (= 10 sc).

Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in every sc.

Rep row 2 till 52 rows are completed. Do not fasten off.

Pin the side panels to the bag. Crochet sc through both pieces.

 

Border

Start with the side panel, 1 sc in side panel, *skip 2 sts, 6 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, rep from * to end, ss in 1st sc. Fasten off.

 

Handles (crochet 2)

Start with 7 ch, ss in 1st to form a ring.

1 ch, 1 sc in every ch, do not end with ss but continue with 1 sc in every sc in the round until the tube is 26 cm. Fasten off.

Close the one end of the tube and fill the tube with a small amount of stuffing. Be careful not to stuff the ends too stiff.

 

Pin the handles at the top on the inside on both the front and back panels, 6 cm from the sides and stitch.

Cut 1 panel of 40 cm x 28 cm from the lining.

Fold the lining with right sides facing each other and stitch the side seams.

Stitch the base corners (see illustration) and fold inside out.

Corners

Place the lining bag inside the crochet bag and fold a small seam at the top edge towards the inside. Pin and stitch to the crochet bag.
